In this page you will find travel information to Athens and info on trasport in the city. We cannot provide information about travel from all countries, but the co-organisers, Triaena Tours and Congresses, at www.triaenatours.gr, can organise your trip to Greece to attend the congress, including, if you wish, accommodation and possibly excursions to other parts of Greece after or before the congress. Please note that you can also book any other travel agency for your arrival in Athens. The Organising Committee can provide on-demand travel information by e-mail at 9esfie@9esfie.gr.

To Athens

The new airport "Eleutherios Venizelos" at Spata (just outside the city) is one of the newest (and probably of the best) in the world. There are daily flights from all major airlines and the national carrier, Olympic Airways.

Alternatively, you can arrive by train (the Intercity train from Salonica is 5.5 hours) or by boat (to the port at Peiraias-Piraeus).

In the city

The centre of the city is quite large, but it is probably easier to walk than anything, because of the traffic. You can go sightseeing in places like Plaka (near the Acropolis), Kolonaki, Lycabettus, and Syntagma Square on foot.

To cover larger distances, there is regular city transport (transport service: OASA-Organisation for Public Transport in Athens) with buses, trolleys and the metro (subway) that is particulartly helpful for the centre of the city. You'll also be surprised at how cheap taxis (cabs) are in Athens. The student ticket for the bus is 0,20€ and for the metro 0,40€. The daily card (that includes transport with the special lines to the airport) costs 3€. Minimum taxi fare is 1,50€, taxis are equipped with a meter. The Organising Committee is negotiating the provision of special cards for those who register to attend the congress for free transport in the city. In any case, there will leased (free) buses that connect the congress hall to the Athens Medical School and the hotels.

The nearest to the Congress Hall public transport points are the "Spiros Patsis" Bus Stop (buses: Averof Proussis 813, A25, A26) and the "Metaxourgeion" Metro Station (10 minutes walk).

Our commitment to people with disabilities

The SAGMS's goal is the development of relationships between students and graduates of medical and health-related schools in Greece and the achievement of cooperation in matters of common scientific concern. As such, we consider it our obligation to devote specίal care for people with motor disabilities who will possibly wish to actively participate in the 9th SCGMS.

If we are promptly informed of participation in the congress, the Organising Committee promises a ready plan for the uninhibited access of people with motor disabilities, not only to the main congress activities, but also to any other events that take place during the three days of the congress. We realise that Athens, despite the great progresses made lately in this direction, is not a city that caters for special needs. We can do nothing less but our best to overcome any difficulties that arise. A special branch of the Organising Committee will specifically care, in a discreet way, for accessibility problems.

The congress hall

The main place of congress activity, the "Athinais" Congress Hall, is at Votanikos (Athinais, Kastorias 34-36, Votanikos, Athens, 104-47). Access is very easy, and there is ample (free for the congress) parking space. You can read more about the congress hall in the special page.

Soon...

The Organising Committee is processing a special map of the city, which will be made available through this page, that will include the congress hall and the most important sites and itineraries in the city.
